How Gas Pumps Work
Gas pumps use suction pumps that create pressure differences to pull fuel up from underground tanks. A pipe goes down into the tank, and a motor above ground removes air from the pipe. This creates lower air pressure inside the pipe than outside.
When the pressure difference gets big enough, outside air pressure pushes fuel up through the pipe to your dispensing nozzle. The motor keeps removing air to maintain the pressure difference that lifts fuel to the surface.
